From an early age I have been obsessed by food. My love of food became apparent when, as a toddler, I was prepared to taste or eat anything imaginable. This was a godsend to my parents who as gourmands could enjoy relatively uninterrupted meals without the noisy disturbance of a restless child.
Food became an integral part of my childhood. I was extremely privileged to be exposed to huge varieties of food and cuisine from round the globe. I still reminisce about wonderful holiday’s in Tuscany spent eating insalate di Mare, proscioutto melone, and tartufo’s on the lively beach of Forte Dei Marmi. Car journeys around France introduced me to the wonders of foie gras, bouillabaise and countless French specialities. Closer to home, the wonderful smell of my mother’s home made chicken soup would occasionally waft through the house. Food features distinctly in my memories of childhood. In fact, seminal moments in my life are usually food related!!
Into early adulthood I started travelling further afield. Regular visits to family in Sydney introduced me to the wonderful fusion of East and West. The simplicity of the dishes combined with the freshness of ingredients was always astounding.
Recently I started travelling to Malaysia. My husband’s family (he is half Chinese) with their extensive food knowledge introduced me to even more exciting and exotic delicacies. I even got to sample the dreaded durian! (I actually thought it was one of the most interesting and unique tasting fruits).
Any foodie born and raised in London will tell you that they are absolutely blessed to be exposed to cuisines from so many diverse and interesting ethnic communities. From some of the best Indian cooking outside of India to the wonderful insurgence of Dim Sum, London truly embraces multiculturalism when it comes to food.
Finally, in the last decade British cooking has exploded onto the culinary scene, spurred by the growing popularity of the ‘gastropub’ as well as a plethora of great British food writers. Nigel Slater I salute you! A new army of British chefs have pushed the boundaries and put the UK on the food map.
It is an extremely exciting time for food. The rise of cheap air travel, globalisation, and the Internet have made eating good food less elitist and more democratic.
My blog will attempt to document all the significant meals and food I encounter both in London and abroad.
