mougins
My Gastronomic tour de force starts on Christmas Eve with a great little warm up at La Terrasse . It has become something of a tradition that every Christmas my family traipses up to this little restaurant perched on a hill in Mougins. On first impression the dining room resembles a cross between a medieval banqueting parlour and a scandinavian furniture showroom, however it is strangely appealing.

In many ways the interior reflects the cooking, a mixture of old and new. The chef sticks to classical dishes constructed with a modern uncomplicated touch. A starter of cauliflower puree sitting above a lobster bisque is a signature dish and one that always sparks debate. For me the lightness and frothiness of the cauliflower combined with the meaty lobster is a perfect union. A leg of Chapon (a castrated chicken) sitting on a bed of roast vegetables failed to wow and induced a definite state of food envy when I spied my partner’s venison, which was cooked to absolute perfection.

The meal ended predictably with a trio of desserts. Suffice to say they were very pleasant but do not warrant great descriptions.

A solid start.

ProvenceI am going to start my blog with my most recent trip to Provence. Over Christmas and New Year I have been lucky enough to have eaten my way through 4 Michelin stars. Firstly at Jacques Chibois’ 2 star restaurant in Grasse and later at La Reserve de Beaulieu, a 2 star restaurant between Nice and Monaco. Other notable restaurant visits include;

  • Kei’s Passion in Nice, featuring an upcoming Japanese Chef exploring the fusion between French and Japanese.
  • La Merenda, a typical provencal restaurant headed by a notable chef who formerly worked at the Negresco.
  • Terre de Truffes, the menu featuring only dishes with truffles in them.
  • La Petite Maison, a Nicoise institution run by a rather formidable “madame” backed up by a team of indolent waiters.
  • La Terrasse, feautring experimental french cuisine.
  • Le Safari, a great little bistro located on the Cours Saleya where there is a wonderful food market everyday.
  • I’ll post each day separately and you’ll get a great idea of a typical Christmas, gastronomically speaking anyway. If you’re inclined to know about me check “About the Author” which you’ll find in the contents. Enjoy!
